A nice way of justifying our hierarchical system?

From Chapter 6 of Aristotle’s Book III of Politics, the following quote is from 1278(b)15, “It is an evident fact that most people cling hard enough to life to be willing to endure a good deal of suffering, which implies that life has in it a sort of healthy happiness and a natural quality of pleasure.”

So is our economic system trying to squeeze every last drop we have in anticipation we won’t budge?
